Ogilvy takes two-shot lead at Australian Masters

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Geoff Ogilvy took a two-stroke lead Saturday in the Australian Masters, shooting an 8-under 63 on his boyhood course at Victoria Golf Club.

Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open champion, had a 13-under 200 total. He eagled the short par-4 opening hole -- hitting a 3-iron to 5 feet -- and had nine birdies and three bogeys.

England's Ian Poulter, the leader after each of the first two rounds, was second after a 69. Australians Nathan Green (67) and Ashley Hall (68) were 9 under.

Greg Chalmers topped a group at 7 under after 67. He's trying to become the second player to complete the Australian Triple Crown after sweeping the Australian Open and Australian PGA last month. Robert Allenby accomplished the feat in 2005.

Top-ranked Luke Donald was 5 under after a 69.

Ogilvy's round tied the eight-year-old course record set by John Wade.

"I think I left a few shots out there weirdly enough, but I think I stole a couple as well, so it all balances out," Ogilvy said.

The Australian followed up his eagle at the 233 meter first hole with a birdie at the second after a long-iron approach to within a few feet, then sank a 50-foot putt for birdie at the third.

After a bogey at the 398-meter par-four fifth, Ogilvy reeled off birdies at four of the next five holes to cement his lead and to complete his outward nine in 29.

He pitched in from 40 meters for birdie at the 400 meter par-four 12th to move to eight under for his round and to a four shot lead. But his run ended with a bogey at the 435-yard par-four 13th, the hardest hole on the course, before a birdie at the last.

"To start eagle, birdie, birdie you're usually going to have a pretty good day after you do that which is a bonus," Ogilvy said. "Playing a thousand rounds on this course I've probably only made three or four twos on the first, or maybe five, but not many, so to start a round like that was pretty good.

"After that every time I had a wedge in my hands on the fairway I hit it pretty close."

Poulter said he struggled with the northeasterly wind on Saturday after southwesterlies on the first two days.

"Hats off to Geoff for going out and scoring 8-under-par in that wind today, it's a great score," Poulter said. "When someone posts a course record on you on Saturday then generally they move forward. Geoff's done that and I'll be chasing him down tomorrow."

Schwartzel pulls to within four of Westwood in Thailand

BANGKOK -- Masters champion Charl Schwartzel shot a second straight 6-under 66 on Saturday move four strokes behind Lee Westwood at the Thailand Golf Championship.

Westwood led by 11 strokes at the halfway stage after going bogey-free on the opening two days but a 1-over 73 in the third round allowed Schwartzel to cut the deficit.

Schwartzel holed four straight birdies from the 2nd hole and was within three shots of the lead heading to the last but a bogey 5 gave Westwood some breathing space.

Westwood's total of 197 for three rounds left him at 19 under. Schwartzel was at 201, and Michael Thompson of the United States had a 69 to put him in third at 12-under 204.

"I didn't expect to be four shots back at the start of today's round," Schwartzel said. "I knew I had to shoot a low score. Lee didn't play particularly well. I've seen him play much better golf.

"I feel I still need to shoot a 64 or 65 on the last day to get a chance. At least there's a light at the end of the tunnel now. Four shots is not much out there."

Schwartzel came from four shots back to win his first major at the Masters in April.

"I've won about two or three tournaments where I was four shots behind," he said. "I don't know what the secret is. I just play my own game when I'm out there."

Westwood shot a career-low 60 in the first round and followed that with a 64. He had four bogeys on Saturday as his form dipped.

"After a 60 and 64, you have to be a bit realistic unfortunately," Westwood said. "A lot of people are going to think you're going to shoot 60, 62 and 64 every day but I'm afraid golf is not like that. Every day you have to reset your goals and your sights.

"A four-shot lead into the last round is a good position to be in."

Dubai winner Thompson youngest ever on Ladies Euro Tour

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- American teenager Lexi Thompson shot a 5-under 67 to win the Dubai Ladies Masters and become the youngest professional winner on the Ladies European Tour on Saturday.

The 16-year-old Thompson pulled away from Lee-Anne Pace of South Africa to win by four strokes for her second professional victory. In September, she won her first event to became the youngest winner on the LPGA Tour.

"It feels amazing," Thompson said. "I'm just honored they invited me back and I'm just grateful to be here. I've been working on my game really hard and it has paid off."

South Korea's Amy Yang is the youngest winner ever on the LET, following her victory as an amateur at the 2006 ANZ Ladies Masters.

Thompson chipped in for a birdie on No. 9 to take a one-shot lead over Pace and extended her lead with four birdies on the back nine for 15-under 273 total.

Pace (69) started strong with two birdies and an eagle on her first six holes, but shaky putting on the back nine ended her chances.

The 2010 European Tour money winner, Pace said hit her approach shot on No. 12 over the green for her second bogey in five holes.

"Things could have been a little different," Pace said. "I hit a bad club on 12, which cost me a shot, and that is where things changed around."

Sophie Gustafson of Sweden (71) was a shot behind Pace in third place followed by four players another shot back.

Michelle Wie (72) came into the final round five shots behind leader Thompson. She fell out of contention with two bogeys and a double-bogey on the front nine, finishing tied for 12th.

"It was pretty frustrating. I couldn't get my putts going," Wie said. "I just needed to play better on the front nine all week. Nothing really went. Nothing went in. At least, I finished birdie, birdie. I gotta work on a lot of things for next season."

Thompson has momentum heading into the 2012 season.

"I'm just going to continue working hard and just try to improve every tournament," she said.

Thompson gets putter under control, takes lead in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- American teenager Lexi Thompson took a two-shot lead after the second round of the Dubai Ladies Masters on Thursday, putting her on course to become the second youngest winner ever on the European Tour.

The 16-year-old Thompson, who became the youngster winner on the LPGA Tour earlier this year, strung together six birdies on her way to a bogey-free 6-under 66 and a total of 136 for the tournament.

Tied for 16th after the first day, Thompson got her short game and irons working on Thursday, hitting a lob wedge to within 10 feet of the pin on the second hole and sending a 178-yard iron shot on the next hole to within 15 feet of the hole. She birdied both holes.

Swedish veteran Sophie Gustafson (67) and Margherita Rigon (68) shared second place, while Paraguay's Julieta Granada and Becky Morgan of Wales were one shot farther back on 139.

"I just made a few more putts today," Thompson said. "I hit it a little bit closer. I was just thinking 'stay steady' and playing consistent."

Thompson has started to match the hype that has surrounded her arrival on the tour, winning the Navistar LPGA Classic by five strokes in September.

A victory in Dubai would make her the second-youngest winner on the European Tour after Amy Yang of South Korea, who won the ANZ Masters in 2006 at 16 years, 191 days. That is just over five months younger than Thompson.

"This is such a great tournament and it would be an honor to win this," Thompson said. "So I'm jut going to try and take it easy and play one shot at a time."

Fellow American Michelle Wie climbed back into contention, shooting a 5-under 67 to remain four shots adrift. Wie also got her start on the LPGA Tour at 16 -- turning pro two years ago.

However, she has struggled to meet expectations, winning only twice on the LPGA Tour and this year falling to 17th in the world rankings due to nagging injuries and a drop in form.

The 22-year-old Wie, looking for her first win of the year, bounced back from an opening 73 in which her shaky putting led to three bogeys. On Thursday, Wie had a bogey-free round in the season-ending event and sank several key birdie putts, including a 30-footer on No. 12. She had five birdies overall, including four on the back nine for a total of 140.

"A little frustrated after the last two holes, but I kept steady out there today," said Wie, who missed a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 18. "I made a couple more putts, and I have two more days to try and shoot some more low scores. I'm still in contention, and going to go out there tomorrow, shoot another low round."

Playing alongside Wie, the 38-year-old Gustafson is also looking for her first victory of the year. She was five shots back after the first day, but had five birdies in a bogey-free second round.

"I was striking the ball very well, so it feels good," Gustafson said. "I was actually hitting the ball awful on Tuesday during the Pro Am, but the Swedish coaches that are here this week from the Swedish Golf Federation helped me find my ball striking."

Four-time major winner Laura Davies (81) continued to struggle in Dubai. The 48-year-old Englishwoman is at 156 will miss the cut for the second week in a row.

She made an early exit at the Indian Open -- only the fourth time she had missed a cut on tour -- after her caddie failed to show up for the first round because of visa problems. She carried her own bag and shot 3 over the first day.

This week, Davies said her problems came down to poor play. Needing a sub-par round Thursday for any chance to play into the weekend, Davies had three bogeys and two double-bogeys on the front nine to end her chances.

"I started nicely. Three-putted the first and had an eagle chance on 3 and just missed it," Davies said. "On the fourth hole, I hit what I thought was a good chip and it went in the water. Triple-bogey, six over. The cut is obviously going to be 1 or 2 [over] and that is a long ways back from there."

Poulter opens with 65, grabs early lead at Australian Masters

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Ian Poulter recovered from an early bogey to shoot seven birdies in a 6-under 65 and take a one-stroke lead after the first round at the Australian Masters on Thursday.

Poulter was one shot clear of local golfer Ashley Hall and two ahead of a group of six including former champion Peter Lonard.

In his first professional tournament in Australia, top-ranked Luke Donald opened with a 69 and was in share of 11th place. Donald, named the U.S. PGA tour player of the year on Tuesday, last week became the first player to win the money title on the PGA Tour and European Tour in the same season.

"Two birdies, no bogeys. It could have been a lot worse," Donald said. "It could have been better. Something to build off."

Donald was level with Greg Chalmers, who is trying to become the second player to complete the Australian Triple Crown after sweeping the Australian Open and Australian PGA last month. Robert Allenby accomplished the feat in 2005.

Poulter, playing the back nine first, had a bogey on the par-4 11th, then birdied five of the next six holes. He closed with a birdie at the par-5 ninth.

The English golfer had only seen the Victoria Golf Club course for the first time on Wednesday, but obviously liked what he saw.

"The only mistake I made today was a three-putt from about 20 feet on my second hole. So that's probably the only frustrating thing," Poulter said. "I hit a lot of good golf shots."

Poulter said he was enjoying the different layout.

"It's refreshing because a number of the courses we play week in week out it just seems like you are taking the driver headcover off on every single par 4 or par 5, and the odd par 3," he said. "It's nice to hit the odd iron off the tee. I enjoy that type of golf, putting it in play and giving yourself chances. I like the way this golf course sets up for me."

Hall got as low as 8 under before a wild finish with a double-bogey on his next-to-last hole, the eighth.

The 28-year-old Hall's round contained an eagle, six birdies, a bogey and the double bogey.

"The finish was a little bit tough. I probably took a little bit of an unwarranted risk on the 8th but I'm still happy with the way I played," he said.

Matteo Manassero, the 18-year-old Italian prodigy, shot 76 and needs a big improvement in his second round if he hopes to make the cut in his first tournament in Australia.

Donald adds Euro Golfer of the Year honor to awards haul

LONDON -- Luke Donald added yet another prize to his glittering list of honors for 2011, picking up the European Tour's Golfer of the Year award on Thursday.

Shedding his "underachiever" tag, the 34-year-old Englishman won three titles on the European Tour and finished in the top 10 in 20 of his 26 tournaments worldwide, helping him become the first player to officially win money lists on both sides of the Atlantic.

Two days after becoming the first Englishman to be voted the PGA Tour's Player of the Year since the inaugural award in 1990, Donald picked up the European equivalent for the first time.

"It was good to see all the hard work I have put in coming to fruition," Donald said. "I was delighted with my game this year and it is rewarding to feel that, sometimes, consistency does pay off.

"Everyone dreams of having a year like this and I am very excited and feel fortunate that it happened to me."

Donald received the most votes from a judging panel featuring golf journalists and commentators to beat 2011 major winners Darren Clarke, Rory McIlroy and Charl Schwartzel.

A first major title remains elusive -- he tied for fourth at the Masters and tied for eighth at the PGA Championship -- but Donald won over his critics in 2011 by capturing four tournaments worldwide.

After beating Martin Kaymer 3 & 2 in the final of the Match Play Championship in Arizona in February, Donald defeated Lee Westwood in a playoff to win the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, the European Tour's flagship event, to supplant his compatriot as the world's top-ranked player.

He warmed up for the British Open in Sandwich by winning the Scottish Open title, finishing a truncated tournament at 19 under after three rounds, but missed the cut at Royal St. George's the following week.

His fourth title of the year was arguably his most impressive, producing a stunning closing-round 64 -- featuring six straight birdies on the back nine -- to win the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic. The victory in the last event on the PGA Tour saw him overtake Webb Simpson to finish at the top of the money list in the United States.

Donald sealed the European Tour's money list title last week, ahead of McIlroy, by finishing third at the Dubai World Championship.

"The manner in which I came through to win both money lists was, I think, the thing that pleased me the most about the season," Donald said. "Going to Florida and winning that tournament when I had to was very important as it gave me the incentive to go on and succeed in Dubai."

New World Order: Donald only possible pick at top of final rankings

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Unclench those teeth.

No jaws will be hitting the floor. We could have written these results on a slip of paper and tucked in an envelope several weeks ago, and it wouldn't have changed.

The envelope, please.

The top player in our final New World Order ranking for 2011, where an entire season of global results was weighed, is none other than Luke Donald, who is No. 1 on every list that purported to measure the game's best.

Be it statistical, subjective, math-based or personally biased, Donald took over the top spot at midseason and only strengthened it, becoming the lone dual member to top the money lists on the European and PGA tours in the same season.

Yep, yet another first.

Whether it's the U.S, Europe or Asia, he's No. 1 in meters, yards and clicks. Whether you drive on the right side of the road, the left side, or in a rickshaw. Small wonder he was just voted the PGA Tour Player of the Year by his peers, a poll tally that should have been about 200-1. We'll allow Webb Simpson to vote for himself.

Our NWO rankings, which are published monthly and debuted in January, are a mix of data and opinion, weighted more heavily on recent performances and perceived dominance in a player's particular theater of battle. Whereas the official world ranking uses a two-year window and Golfweek magazine's Sagarin computer emphasizes a 12-month span and head-to-head play, the NWO is a quick-adjusting compendium of input, instinct and impulse. All scientific-like, too.

Here's the last hurrahs and huzzahs for 2011, with a certain Englishman leading the list yet again.

1. Luke Donald
England
OWGR: 1
Sagarin: 1
November New World Order: 1
Hey, he ranked first across the board, huh? It was a season of 1s lined up like a picket fence for Donald, including the birth of his second child, delivered on, you guessed it, 11-11. All Donald did last week was finish a rock-solid third in the European Tour finale, staged on a course where he'd had little past success, to become the first joint member the Euro and U.S. tours to top the money list in the same season. Tuesday, he was voted the Player of the Year by his PGA Tour peers. This week, he's playing in his final event of the year, the Aussie Masters, then will finally settle in for a long winter's nap. A well-deserved one too. In 26 starts awarding world ranking points, Donald has finished in the top 10 a total of 20 times. He was 11th in another start. In straight-up, head-to-head play against other players ranked in the top 10 that particular week, Donald heads to Australia with a 92-32-4 mark, and against OWGR top-50 players, he's 460-130-21. With four global wins, that's about as consistent as it gets.

2. Rory McIlroy
Northern Ireland
OWGR: 2
Sagarin: 3
November New World Order: 2
The kid had a shot at stealing Donald's European Tour money title last week if he won in Dubai and Luke finished outside the top nie, but Donald was having none of it. McIlroy turned up sick with dengue fever, his manager said, and seemed fried after an ambitious fall of chasing appearance fees around the globe. He'll be far more mindful of the air miles logged in 2012, when he will join the PGA Tour for the second time. Rigors of travel notwithstanding, in his last seven official starts, he only once finished outside the top four. He also won the unofficial Shanghai Masters, a short-field event. Along with young gun Rickie Fowler -- who is equally popular, though not yet nearly as successful -- the kids in the U.S. galleries will have plenty of players to latch onto next year.

3. Martin Kaymer
Germany
OWGR: 4
Sagarin: 10
November New World Order: 3
After winning the HSBC event in China, a World Golf Championships event, the Germanator finished his year with an 11th last week at the Euro Tour finale in Dubai. Though he has long maintained a home in Arizona, Kaymer's about the last premiere player who has continually eschewed PGA Tour membership and is in fact the lone guy on this list still tied solely to the overseas circuit. Whatever, it seems to be working for him, because he finished the year with a pair of victories and two runner-up finishes, despite a lengthy flat spell in the spring and summer. As with Donald, Kaymer is a class act and credit to the game and should be a formidable foe in the Ryder Cup next fall.

4. Lee Westwood
England
OWGR: 3
Sagarin: 7
November New World Order: 4
Westy won the 12-man Nedbank Challenge in South Africa two weeks ago and had a chance to move up a notch or two, but he fell flat last week at the Dubai event, finishing a forgettable 29th. Still, it was another big year for the English veteran, who spent several weeks parked at No. 1 in the world before he was unseated in a head-to-head fight with Donald at Wentworth in the summer. Like McIlroy, Westy jumped aboard as a PGA Tour member for 2012 and will absolutely improve the usual cast of characters at the bigger events. If some of Donald's golden putting touch rubbed off on his countryman, Westwood could easily move back atop this list in 2012.

5. Webb Simpson
USA
OWGR: 9
Sagarin: 6
November New World Order: 5
He lost a pitched and memorable battle against Donald at the PGA Tour season finale with the money title at stake, but it was a spectacular breakthrough season for the North Carolina native nonetheless. He won twice and lost two other events in playoffs -- meaning he shot the low score four times in PGA Tour play, if you prefer -- and jumped from outside the world top 200 into the top 10 in the span of roughly 45 weeks. The PGA Tour didn't announce who finished second to Donald in Tuesday's Player of the Year vote, but you can bet it was the Charlotte resident. I guess that would make him Charlotte's Webb, huh?

6. Adam Scott
Australia
OWGR: 5
Sagarin: 26
November New World Order: 7
Think things can't happen in a comparative hurry at the elite levels of the game? Three years ago at the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott were sent off in the same threesome as the Nos. 1-2-3 players in the world. Who would have possibly guessed that Scotty, who took a significant header starting soon thereafter, would be the lone member of that trio in the top 10 a couple of seasons later? In fact, Scott has undergone such a renaissance, he's climbed to fifth in the OWGR after starting the year at No. 24. Two major developments helped the cause -- switching to a belly putter in the spring and adding controversial caddie Steve Williams at midseason. Scotty finished eighth or better in six of his last nine worldwide starts. It would be a surprise of he moves backward in 2012, frankly.

7. Charl Schwartzel
South Africa
OWGR: 11
Sagarin: 5
November New World Order: Not ranked
It's been a somewhat predictable, up-and-down season for the quiet Schwartzel, who was playing on the PGA Tour as a rookie this year. But consider what he accomplished on some venues where he'd been previously, like Augusta National, where he won. By the end of the year, back playing on tracks where he'd played in the past, the wiry South African finished with five consecutive finishes of ninth or better, including fifth at the Race to Dubai finale. Once he becomes familiar with more of the U.S. venues, there's room for improvement. The best metric of Schwartzel's talent is his play at the Grand Slam events, where he finished a combined 14 under this year, the best mark in golf by a whopping 10 strokes over Stricker and Sergio Garcia.

8. Steve Stricker
USA
OWGR: 6
Sagarin: 2
November New World Order: 8
Had you noticed that in this week's OWGR, Stricker is the top-ranked Yank at No. 6? His season somewhat mirrors the American prospects of the moment. After some typically solid play, he was sidelined by a disk issue in his neck that forced the popular veteran to withdraw from a FedEx series event. With the futures of U.S. standard bearers like Furyk, Mickelson and Woods looking as uncertain as ever -- at No. 14, Lefty is ranked highest among that trio -- the American fortunes look pretty spotty. Before the injury, Stricker won twice and looked as solid as ever, especially with his putter, but he turns 45 in February. In our view, he hit the shot of the year on the final hole to win the John Deere Classic. Hopefully, the neck issue will not require surgery, and he'll have more chances in 2012.

9. Sergio Garcia
Spain
OWGR: 16
Sagarin: 4
November New World Order: 6
To us, it was one of the more amusing statements of the year, because despite his prowess in two languages, Sergio Garcia kept getting his cliches crossed. As he mounted an impressive comeback season after two years of lethargic, semi-interested play, Garcia repeatedly kept saying, "it's a work in process." That might be true, since he certainly showed progress. With a strong finish, Garcia won twice in Spain on the heels of a solid showing in the States, where his results weren't nearly as spectacular. In fact, on U.S. soil in 2011, Garcia's T7 finish at the U.S. Open was his best result. But it did lead to an unexpected showing in the majors, where he posted the second-best cumulative performance of any player. Garcia's still fragile and prone to losing his composure, of course, but in a way, that's a good sign. At least he cares again.

10. Dustin Johnson
USA
OWGR: 7
Sagarin: 34
November New World Order: Not ranked
Unlike the guy at No. 1, this was admittedly a tough pick. He has won every year he has been on tour, or four seasons in a row. He has contended on Sunday at three different major championships in the past two years. Yet, is there a more maddening player in the game as far as expectations? Johnson hits it a mile, but his short game is so full of holes, it's hard to know where to start. Johnson ranked dead last on tour in putting from between 5-10 feet, converting only 47.1 percent of his opportunities from that crucial distance. Take a look at his Sagarin rating, which heavily emphasizes head-to-head play. In fact, Zach Johnson is ranked higher by the Sagarin computer. D.J. went through a parade of caddies this year, which didn't help, and has hooked up again with Bobby Brown, his former looper. It's interesting to note that Simpson, the other Yank under 30 on this list, is regarded as a player who gets the most out of his game. Johnson hasn't scratched the surface.
